How it happens (physiology)
With age, fibroblasts in the dermis make less type I collagen and elastin; existing fibers also become fragmented and disorganized. This leads to dermal thinning, reduced elasticity, and surface wrinkling.
UV exposure accelerates this (“photoaging”) by generating reactive oxygen species that damage DNA and matrix proteins, stimulating enzymes (MMPs) that break down collagen and elastin.
Variations

Intrinsic aging: fine, uniform lines, dry/thin skin.

Photoaging: deeper wrinkles, coarse texture, pigment changes, and “leathery” skin especially on sun-exposed areas.
Severity & treatment approach
